Handling adversity

The importance of Charity

Some of you will have seen that BioHorizons and Henry Schein are doing a charity cycle ride, cycling the length of Ireland from 21st – 24th June 2017, for DKMS. Due to personal reasons and various injuries, since starting the training our team has reduced from a team of 10 to a team of just 1. That lonely person is Pat Bolger, Managing Director of Henry Schein Ireland.

Amazingly his desire is still strong enough to plough, or rather cycle, ahead on his own. Changing tack slightly Pat (or Paddy as he is affectionately known) has decided to start on Thursday 22nd and attempt it in a mere 2 days. He should finish Friday night but is aware his feat may end on Saturday instead given the amount his body will be pushed to the extreme!

Why would he still do this I hear you ask?

Well Paddy is extremely conscious that we set about to do this challenge to raise awareness for DKMS. DKMS, an international not for profit organisation, are dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and blood disorders. The vision of DKMS is to delete blood cancer and provide every blood cancer patient with a matching donor or help with access to treatment – around the globe.

As we know dentists play a fundamental role in the early diagnosis of leukemia, knowing that first symptoms of disease occur in the oral cavity. Every 20 minutes, someone in the UK & Ireland is diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma. A blood stem cell donation from a matching donor could save their lives. All it takes to go on to the stem cell registry is a two minute cheek swab, sent to you when you register online. Paddy would like to still raise awareness and knowledge about this and the work of DKMS.

How can I help Paddy and this amazing feat?
